Dave3rdActor/The Blog

Nobody tells you what getting old is like. I will.

Really. Who wants to talk about getting old? Who wants to hear about it? How do you prepare for your life after 50? All you have is your eyes — seeing all the wrinkled, shuffling people around you. You wouldn’t think of asking them what it’s like, would you? And what do you expect to hear if you do — complaints, disease talk, incoherence?

Can you read up on aging? All of the literature’s about loss, fear, Alzheimer’s, cost, care.

Can we live at home all our lives, or is it damaging and destructive to be old, isolated and depressed, living alone in your own home?

But before this gets to be the usual passive-aggressive rant, here’s how I’m trying to address this question. I’m going to write more about my own experience. I’m 70, so I have some. Right now, I’m in a new production of “The Fantasticks.” My knees hurt and I’m intensely aware of how out of shape I am. I’ll write about this, and how I’m dealing with the challenge of keeping myself in the game, even after I volunteered to retire. This site is one part of that. Watch this space.
